De Roma is a place where over 600 volunteers of all ages and income levels feel “at home”. Anyone motivated and willing to commit regularly is welcome. After all, De Roma exists only thanks to the tireless efforts and enthusiasm of its volunteers. Without them, De Roma's dream would never have come true.
Thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer
On this page, you’ll find more information about volunteering at De Roma. Below, you can read about the different types of volunteer work you can do at De Roma and what you should definitely know.
After reading this information, do you feel excited to join our volunteer team?
Our team is complete for this season. However, you can already sign up to volunteer in the new season. Please register using the button below. In June, we will contact you so that you can start in September.
Types of volunteering
For each activity (concert, film, morning shift) we count on at least 10 volunteers. For sold-out performances, we even need 30 to 50 volunteers per evening. The performances in AMOR, De Roma's restaurant, are on a smaller scale. There, we have about 4 volunteers per performance.
‘Vliegende brigade’ (Flying brigade)
This is the morning crew, who take care of cleaning De Roma and getting everything ready for the next event. The flying brigade is active almost daily from 9:00 to 11:30, both during the week and on weekends. We always provide fresh brealfast pastries, delicious coffee and a good atmosphere to start the day usefully and pleasantly!
Movies
Volunteers take care of the cloakroom, bar, ticket scanning, balcony control and programme distribution and they can also watch the movie. We expect volunteers at 13:00 for the afternoon screening and 19:00 for the evening screening.
Concerts and performances
Volunteers take care of the bar, ticket scanning, venue surveillance, checking the balcony and the cloakroom. Volunteers take turns, so they can attend a part of the concert. We have concerts and performances that are standing or seated, with and without a DJ. Concerts and performances are often in the evening, but we also have afternoon shows.
Cooking brigade
Led by our in-house chefs, we prepare small and large quantities of tasty dishes that we serve to the artists who come to perform at De Roma. This is done with a small kitchen crew. The cooking brigades take place from 13:30 to 17:00.

What you need to know
- We mainly speak Dutch here. Is your Dutch still a work in progress? Let’s see together how we can make it work.
- The start and end time of your volunteering depends on which activity you like to do. Some activities are during the day, concerts are mainly in the evening. You'll find more info above and when you apply for a shift.
- Every 6 weeks, we send out a big volunteer letter with a new calendar of activities. You can apply for activities depending on your interests and schedule.
- We regularly organise a hands-on tour for new volunteers where you will learn all about how De Roma functions behind the scenes.
- We expect all volunteers to come and help with some regularity. At least once a month.
- As a volunteer, you are insured. The volunteer insurance covers both the organisation and the volunteers during their activities and their service trips.
- If you receive unemployment benefit or early retirement pension and want to keep your benefit, you must make a declaration in advance using the C45B form (declaration of voluntary activity for an institution or non-profit association). You can find this form at your RVA office or download it from www.rva.fgov.be.
- If you receive benefits from the health insurance fund, you must ask permission from your advisory doctor.
- Volunteers at De Roma do not receive financial compensation. However, we celebrate our volunteers with dedicated appreciation activities throughout the year.
