Maart is Black History Month in België en dit jaar nodigt BHM je uit om actief te luisteren met “Sounds of Blackness” als overkoepelend thema. 

In AMOR gaat BHM in gesprek met met artiesten, ondernemers en community builders uit de Afrikaanse diaspora. Hoe is het voor hen om in België te leven? Hoe kijken zij naar hun land van herkomst? Is een connectie met het land van herkomst belangrijk en hoe doe je dat dan precies? 

Met: Idrissa Tikane, Saidou Guiro, Elisabeth Vergauwen en Virginie Iribagiza. Moderatie: Rhoda Yeboah.

Idrissa Tikane werkt in tech-sales en heeft ook interesse in ondernemerschap. Hij heeft meegewerkt aan community projecten zoals Kroeshaar Festival. Hij heeft een passie voor Afrika, de Afrikaanse diaspora, gemeenschap en het creëren van plekken waar mensen samen kunnen groeien.

Saidou Guiro is een Belgisch-Senegalese internationale DJ en producer. Hij heeft een diploma internationale politiek en mensenrechten en hij werkt al 6 jaar in de humanitaire en diplomatieke wereld.

Elisabeth Vergauwen zet zich in voor de diaspora door het organiseren van evenementen voor de Afrikaanse diaspora, met een focus op jongeren. 

Virginie Iribagiza is educatief medewerkster bij Sankaa vzw. Ze werkt met Afrikaanse en Belgische verenigingen die een link hebben met Afrika. Veerkracht, ondersteuning en verbinding is de motor van onze community

Rhoda Yeboah is overdag een Account & Customer Success Manager bij een SaaS-startup en is ook actief in het communicatieteam van Black History Month Belgium. Daarnaast is ze creator van de RCL Podcast, wedding MC, host en eventmoderator, waarbij ze altijd energie, verbinding en impact brengt, van grote podia tot intieme momenten.

This year, Black History Month Belgium invites you to listen deeply with “The Sounds of Blackness” as its guiding theme. The sounds of our words, of our music, of our bodies have always been central to Black expression, carrying memory, resistance, joy, and collective imagination across time and place. From rhythm and melody to voice and silence, sound shapes how Black stories are remembered, shared, and transformed.

Sound goes beyond music. It is the sound of the words we use to tell our stories and to express our inner feelings. It is the laughter and clamour as well as the sigh and the cry. It is the sound of release when we move our bodies. Therefore, expect an amplification and propagation of sound through conversations and reflections that explore the realities of our bodies, communities, and histories.

Alongside moments of collective celebration, the programme also creates space for attentive listening, learning, rest, and healing, recognising these as essential practices within Black cultural life.

By amplifying Black sounds within the Belgian context, this edition highlights the many migration journeys, musical influences, body experiences, and intergenerational narratives that connect Black communities. At the same time, it calls for continued awareness and solidarity with those whose voices are being silenced elsewhere, including in the Congo, Sudan, and beyond. 

The Sounds of Blackness honours these legacies as deeply rooted and constantly evolving. The Sounds of Blackness invites us not only to hear, but to listen, feel, and resonate together.
