Ata Kak, the Ghanaian artist behind the cult classic Obaa Sima, created his own unique blend of highlife, hip-hop, and funk in the early 1990s. His self-produced cassette remained under the radar for years until it was rediscovered in 2002 and reissued in 2015 by Awesome Tapes From Africa. Since then, Ata Kak—once an enigma—has been conquering international stages with his infectious energy and pioneering role in Twi rap. Despite the late recognition, he remains modest and continues to create from his home studio: “Music is like water, once it flows out, it can go anywhere.”
