Bilal is an outstanding soul singer, you might know from his collaborations with The Roots. Among others, he is the powerful voice on their song The Other Side and impressed online with his performance of It Ain't Fair at their Tiny Desk Concert. He even received a Grammy Award for his vocal contribution to These Walls on Kendrick Lamar's iconic album To Pimp A Butterfly.
In the intimate setting of our foyer, this world-class artist will present his new album Adjust Brightness. After his previous album In Another Life and the live performance Live at Glasshaus, this new album is another big step forward as a solo artist. Bilal combines his mastery of soul, jazz and R&B with abstract electronic elements to create an exciting afro-futuristic whole. As influences, he cites jazz legend Miles Davis, techno wizard Aphex Twin, noise-jazz experimentalist Stereolab and drum and bass master Squarepusher.
Despite this wealth of influences and collaborations, Adjust Brightness remains a typical Bilal album, with his versatile and intuitive vocal expression being the beating heart of every song. Bilal's long-time musical partner Conley Tone Whitfield and multi-instrumentalist Simon Martinez once again played key roles. The song Sunshine illustrates their creative alchemy, where abstract shapes and colours shaped the music. The songs We Are What We Are, Lay Around and Tell Me also excel in wondrous creativity.
