Black Tea

On her wedding day, Aya, a young Ivorian, says “no” to everyone’s surprise. She leaves the groom at the altar and begins a new life in China. She finds work in the tea room of Cai, a 45-year-old Chinese man. As he teaches her the ancient art of tea, their relationship gradually transforms into tender love. But can their relationship survive their troubled past and the prejudices of others?*

Ten years after his successful film Timbuktu (2014), Abderrahmane Sissako directs a new film which unfolds as a story of female self-liberation mixed with a torrid intercultural love story. A dazzling story about forbidden romance and the art of making tea.

“Black Tea is refined and atmospheric cinema…” (DE TIJD)
“Black Tea is not the kind of cinema that deals with major conflicts. Sissako immerses us in an elegiac and dreamy atmosphere, romantic in the classic sense of the term. With the help of French cameraman Aymerick Pilarski, he created a movie full of wonderful colors and soft lighting. The movie evokes, for example, memories of In the Mood for Love." (DE TIJD)
