Mariinka

In eastern Ukraine, childhood friends see their lives violently derailed by a shifting front line. Natasha, a promising boxing talent, becomes a military paramedic. Angela, who lost her parents at a young age, survives by transporting goods to both sides of the front line. Caught up in a modern Greek tragedy, brothers Mark and Ruslan now fight on opposite sides of the front line – against each other. Their youngest brother, Daniil, follows the war from a distance, from the safety of his adoptive family in the United States.

Mariinka, filmed over ten years on 16 mm, begins long before the world witnessed the large-scale invasion. It is the long-awaited second feature film by Pieter-Jan De Pue, following his Sundance Film Festival award-winning debut, The Land of the Enlightened.
