The Day Iceland Stood Still

To mark International Women's Day on 8 March, we are screening The Day Iceland Stood Still: the surprisingly funny and above all inspiring story of how 90% of Icelandic women stopped work for a day and revolted against gender inequality.

It was a morning in autumn 1975 when almost all women refused to work, cook or look after children, bringing their country to its knees. Following that day, Iceland underwent a transformation to become one of the best places in the world to be a woman.

In The Day Iceland Stood Still, the women themselves recount for the first time how they experienced that day. Using playful animations, archival footage and a dose of subversive humour, the film brings their revolt to life.

Fifty years later, their message is as powerful as ever: together, women can bring the world to a standstill and set it in motion again.
