BHM diaspora talk

B(l)ack to our roots

  • i.c.w. Black History Month Belgium

Black History Month Belgium talks with people from the African diaspora. What is it like for them to live in Belgium? How do they view their country of origin? Have they already gone back? Is a connection with the country of origin important and what forms can that connection take?

We will engage with Evodia Uggi from Sankaa, Oscar Yaw Asamoah from YABs Network and Maame Nsiah from NSIIAH.

The conversation will be conducted partially in Dutch and partially in English and will be moderated by Philsan Omar Osman

This year’s multidisciplinary socio-cultural festival Black History Month Belgium embraces a theme layered with meaning: “B(l)ack to Our Roots.” The phrase is a conscious play on words, symbolising a strong desire to return to the festival’s foundational purpose for Black communities— a celebration of heritage, identity, diversity, and creativity. It also invites a thoughtful exploration of ancestral legacies, cultural histories, and the wisdom passed down through generations.

Black History Month Belgium not only celebrates the rich diversity of Black communities in the Belgian context but also highlights the different migration journeys that unite them. Honouring the cultures connected to ancestral roots goes hand in hand with fostering solidarity. As such, the 2025 edition also seeks to inspire awareness and support for those still facing hardships in places like the Congo, Sudan, and beyond. The festival invites attendees to reflect, connect, and engage in meaningful global solidarity.

SANKAA is a democratic and pluralistic socio-cultural association. Sankaa includes both Belgian associations linked to African communities and associations working on relevant themes and respond to the needs of the African community in Belgium.

YABs network aims to form a bridge between the African diaspora and the continent through entrepreneurship, economic opportunities and professional empowerment. Besides cultural connection, they believe the diaspora plays a crucial role in Africa's economic growth.

Fashion brand NSIIAH was founded in 2020 by Ghanaian-Belgian stylist and creative director Maame Nsiah, after years of experience in the European fashion industry. Made in Accra and Antwerp, NSIIAH's garments combine traditional elements such as Adinkra cloths with modern styles.
