Kif Kif, Flanders’ loudest anti-racist voice, is celebrating its 25th anniversary. We are marking this occasion in our own unique way: with critical debate, a packed dance floor and compelling stories from diverse and new voices!
2001: the far right is on the rise, and for the first time the internet offers activists the chance to connect with one another. A diverse group of young people decide they need their own platform to take part in the public debate on diversity and racism. Kif Kif was born. 25 years later, despite growing backlash, Kif Kif is still the most important anti-racist voice in Flanders. We want to celebrate this with everyone!
Because this voice is under pressure. The far right is now taking over the centre. Anti-racism is being criminalised. Profit-driven internet platforms, led by far-right billionaires, are making healthy debate impossible. Yet Kif Kif continues the fight.
On this evening, we’ll be discussing the vision for the future of Kif Kif, putting the contributors in the spotlight, and celebrating the successes with the community – both on stage and on the dance floor!
Journalist Layla El-Dekmak will be in conversation with Ico Maly (Tilburg University), Sinan Çankaya (writer and anthropologist) and Fenya Fischler (queer and anti-zionist activist). Together, they will explore developments in the media, civil society and anti-racism, and the paths that lie ahead for us.
Spoken word artist Sevdâ Söğütlü will perform a poem written to mark Kif Kif’s 25th anniversary.
We also present four inspiring profiles of contributors, the writing heart of Kif Kif: Tuly Salumu (author of Bintje and columnist for De Morgen), Havva Akçaoglu (up-and-coming author and project assistant), Jasenko Tabaković (poet) and Shashitu Rahima Tarirga (educator) talk about their writing journey at Kif Kif and the impact it has had on their personal and professional lives.
Afterwards, we will continue the party on the dance floor with DJ SAHЯA!
