Julian
To mark International Women's Day on 8 March, we are screening Julian. After an unexpected encounter, Fleur and Julian fall instantly in love. When Julian asks for her hand in marriage, Fleur has the bold idea of getting married in every country where two women have the right to do so. Driven by love and a growing sense of necessity, they take the plunge and embark on their journey. After only four ceremonies, their symbolic honeymoon comes to an end when life inevitably catches up with them.
Julian, based on the eponymous novel by LGBTQIA+ activist Fleur Pierets published in 2019, is the impressive debut feature film by 27-year-old Cato Kusters, who already won an award a few years ago at Film Fest Gent for her graduation short film Finns Hiel. For Julian, she even travelled to Canada, where her film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. This is an honour that only one other Belgian director (Fien Troch, with her film Home) has achieved before her.
