Lizz Wright

Lizz Wright grew up as a pastor's daughter in Georgia, in the southern United States. With her talent as a singer, she hosted almost all religious services. Through the power of her voice, she learned to move and inspire audiences. Wright was first renowned as a gospel and soul singer, but then also established herself on the jazz scene. This fall we will be welcoming Lizz Wright to De Roma for the fourth time. She will present her new album Shadow, her eighth album and her first studio album under her own label Blues & Green Records.

Shadow is an album that once again reflects Wright's warm voice and authentic storytelling talent. In addition to her own interpretations of well-known songs, the new album also contains five of her own songs. Wright sings about themes such as faith and resilience, sadness and happiness, but also social inequality and historical injustice. What remains after listening to each song is a strong message of love and humanity.

Musically, Wright remains faithful to a mix of soul and jazz, but she is now also heavily influenced by blues and enriches her songs with the sound of string instruments and an organ. The album was recorded in Chicago with producer Ryan Freeland and with the collaboration of numerous artists, including Meshell Ndegeocello and Angélique Kidjo.
