Rhiannon Giddens

Rhiannon Giddens is one of the most remarkable voices in the contemporary folk scene. Originally trained as an opera singer, she found her true calling in the rich traditions of folk, country, and blues—genres she now reshapes in her own distinctive way. The result is a truly unique artistic signature. She also showcased the breadth and boldness of her musical universe on her stunning latest album You’re the One (2023, Nonesuch Records).

As a Black woman, Giddens initially felt like an outsider in the predominantly white world of country and string band music. Over time, however, she discovered that the roots of this music are far more diverse than often assumed. Through her work—particularly with her band Carolina Chocolate Drops—she plays a key role in bringing that overlooked history back into view and reclaiming the Black contribution to it.

Giddens’ impressive career speaks for itself: she has won multiple GRAMMY Awards, received the Pulitzer Prize, and been awarded the prestigious MacArthur “Genius” Grant. As a singer, instrumentalist, and composer (for opera, ballet, and film), she continues to push boundaries, driven by an artistic vision that is both engaged and forward-looking.

On stage, Giddens is known as an exceptional performer. As Pitchfork once wrote, “few artists are so fearless and so ravenous in their exploration.” NPR also rightly counts her among the most influential musicians of the 21st century.
