Falling asleep to the sound of her father's voice as he sat in front of the fireplace, strumming velvety melodies with his hard-working hands. These are the first memories that Alela Diane will cherish forever. They inspired her to start writing her own songs. With success, because the queen of melancholic gospel pop is now on her seventh solo album, Who's Keeping Time. Those who were at De Roma in 2019 know that life is good in the world of the American singer-songwriter.
After the death of folk legend Michael Hurley, a key figure in the local music scene and someone she knew well personally, Alela Diana rediscovered her desire for connection and live music. This was the starting point for her new album. While she has worked mainly solo in recent years, this time she sought out collaboration. In the attic of her Victorian house, she invited drummer Danny Austin-Manning, bassist Sebastian Owens and co-producer Sam Weber. Anna Tivel, Peter Lalish (Lucius) and members of Blind Pilot also came to contribute.
The result is an intimate, cinematic album in which Alela's distinctive voice effortlessly transports you into her world of mourning and resurrection. Who's Keeping Time? once again confirms Alela Diane's exceptional place in the contemporary folk world.
