Space Quartet

Nicolas Mortelmans, Stef Kamil Carlens, Tim Vanhamel and Teun Verbruggen

SPACE Quartet is an improvisation collective founded by Nicolas Mortelmans following his second album SPACE. For the recording of that record - release in October 2025 on Rotkat Records - Mortelmans dove into the studio with Roland van Campenhout, Stef Kamil Carlens, Tim Vanhamel and Simon Segers. The result of this musical encounter is a raw, spontaneous and honest record where all the music is improvised.

Nicolas Mortelmans played in Belgium at Gent Jazz and SfinksFestival, among others. The Belgian sitar player studied with Anoushka Shankar, among others, and released his debut album MĀYĀ on W.E.R.F. records in April 2024. With SPACE, he returns to his roots and experiments with psychedelic rock, ambient, funk and jazz.

At De Roma, expect an intense concert that can be both meditative and explosive. For the live improvisation concerts, Simon Segers - who is on international tour with Sylvie Kreusch - will be replaced by Teun Verbruggen on drums. Verbruggen is one of the most versatile and adventurous drummers on the Belgian and international jazz and improvisation scene. With his innovative playing style and inexhaustible energy, he has become a key figure in the development of contemporary jazz and free improvisation.
