Steel Pulse celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2026 as one of the most influential reggae bands in the world. Founded in 1975 in Birmingham by David “Dread” Hinds and Selwyn Brown, both descendants of the Windrush generation, the band grew into an icon of socially conscious music. 

Their breakthrough came with the album Handsworth Revolution and tours with punk bands and later reggae legends such as Burning Spear and Bob Marley. In the 1980s, they conquered the American market with the album True Democracy and won a Grammy in 1986 for Babylon the Bandit. Their music combines roots reggae with influences from punk, R&B, and rock, carrying powerful messages of social justice and anti-racism.
