Eliades Ochoa (1946) is the last surviving male singer of the Buena Vista Social Club. The group of Cuban musicians became world famous in the late 1990s with their album full of traditional son music. Ochoa, who is also a gifted guitarist, sings the hits El Cuarto De Tula and Chan Chan on the iconic album.
But Ochoa has been working hard his whole life. He learned to play the guitar at the age of six and has been earning his living as a musician in the cafés of Santiago de Cuba ever since. In 1978, he joined the legendary group Quarteto Patria, which has been keeping the traditions of Cuban folk music alive since the 1940s. He has been the group's leader since 1982 and continued to tour and record albums with the quartet until the 2000s. He then expanded the quartet with a new generation of musicians. At the age of 79, he continues to breathe new life into Cuba's musical heritage.
We are therefore honoured that Eliades Ochoa will be coming to De Roma for the fourth time in 2026. Together with his musicians, 'the Cuban Johnny Cash' will play songs from his own rich repertoire as well as iconic classics from the Buena Vista Social Club. Authentic and warm-blooded, not to be missed by anyone with a heart for Latin American music!
