The Colorist Orchestra

Re-composed / ‘Gently Stolen’

  • i.c.w. Radio 1

Imagine a chamber orchestra that has lost its way and ended up in a late‑night nightclub. That’s what the new instrumental music by The Colorist Orchestra sounds like. In their search for club‑infused, cinematic and danceable textures, the Belgian band arrives in a musical world that balances between pop and contemporary classical music — with echoes of Penguin Café Orchestra, Talking Heads and Tom Zé.

The compositions originate from interpretations, mash‑ups and reworkings of existing instrumental (dance) music, taking inspiration from artists such as Daft Punk, Jean‑Michel Jarre, Chilly Gonzales and Jeff Mills. Gradually, the recognizable elements fade away and new, autonomous pieces emerge. But attentive listeners may still catch a familiar fragment here and there — quiz fun guaranteed!

Since their founding in 2013, The Colorist Orchestra has sought dialogue with international vocalists such as Emiliana Torrini, Gabriel Rios, Howe Gelb, Cibelle, Sumie and Lisa Hannigan. In this new project, the focus shifts towards the orchestra itself: its distinctive sonic color, instrumentation and collective energy.

After years of refining, searching and reimagining, The Colorist Orchestra now presents re‑composed / “Gently Stolen”: brand‑new music full of rhythm, surprise and musical finesse. Let yourself be carried away into the wondrous universe of this unique Belgian band.
