In the late 1990s, eight-year-old Sasha moves from Hungary to Canada with her family. Her childhood unfolds beneath the clear skies of Vancouver Island and is filled with carefree days at the beach. She plays with her brothers, cautiously forms new friendships, and discovers the freedom of her new home.

Yet beneath the surface, an unseen threat lingers. Her older brother Jeremy is struggling with himself, and his increasingly difficult and unpredictable behaviour places growing strain on the family. Sasha does not understand what troubles him, but she continues to seek out his company. In a rare moment of connection, Jeremy gives her a small stolen keyring featuring a blue heron.
