Sharp lyrics, absurd humor, and a truly unique sound: since the 1990s, CAKE has been charting its own radically independent course. After the huge success of their latest album Showroom of Compassion (which hit number 1 on the U.S. charts upon release), the band is now working on a brand-new record set to arrive this autumn. The first two singles already show CAKE at its finest: socially engaged, playful, and full of unexpected musical twists.
CAKE emerged in the early nineties when singer John McCrea gathered a group of musicians from Sacramento’s vibrant music scene. It quickly became clear that CAKE was anything but an ordinary band. Built around McCrea’s ironic, deadpan lyrics, the group created a musical playground where country, mariachi, new wave, college rock, funk, folk, and hip-hop happily collided. Their debut album, Motorcade of Generosity, arrived in 1994 and was immediately hailed as one of the best indie releases of the year.
After Motorcade came Fashion Nugget in 1996. Thanks to the single The Distance—still their most successful song—and a delightful cover of I Will Survive, the album catapulted CAKE into a permanent place in music history. After their exhilarating show at De Roma in late 2019, we’re delighted to welcome these good‑humored Americans back to Borgerhout.
