During a weekday coffee break, two chimney sweep friends each share an unusual experience within their monogamous heterosexual marriages. For one, it involves a dream, for the other intimate contact. For both, it will strongly challenge their views on gender and sexuality.
Sex, a disarming film that covers more than its title, is the first part in Sex Dreams Love, a triptych by Norwegian writer and filmmaker Dag Johan Haugerud about identity and desire for liberation. Sex premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, Love at Venice.
Haugerud places great importance on natural dialogue (and the doubt within it) and clearly depicts all the confusion in a thoughtful and understated style. The camaraderie in this candid conversational movie defies all the clichés of male relationships and midlife crises. Sometimes the best life advice comes from an unexpected corner, high up on a roof.
Part 3, Love, screens on 19 November at De Roma and for part 2, Dreams, we will have to wait until its release in December 2025.
