Sheherazaad is an American musician of Indian origin whose voice is truly impressive. Her EP Qasr was released on the prestigious Erased Tapes label, produced by none other than Grammy Award-winning artist Arooj Aftab.

Her debut album, Khudgarz, is due for release on 20 November, also on Erased Tapes. Across ten theatrical tracks, Sheherazaad blends her signature ‘dark folk’ and sombre pop with influences drawn from South Asian musical traditions. She sings mainly in Urdu, interspersing her lyrics with passages in English and Tamil, and explores themes such as identity, the diaspora, language and female self-determination.

The album was recorded with the participation of over thirty musicians from diverse cultural backgrounds. Traditional instruments from Hindustani, Turkish, Arabic and Carnatic music are combined with field recordings and atmospheric sounds, making each track a world unto itself.
