Manar and her husband Milad set up the Waldorf school House of Hope in the occupied Palestinian town of Al-Eizariya, on the West Bank. The school is a place where pupils learn to sing and breathe in an atmosphere of art and humanity. Due to the mounting tension outside the school walls, it is becoming increasingly difficult to uphold the pacifist ideals and offer the pupils a sense of safety and dignity.
Director Marjolein Busstra worked closely with a Palestinian crew and followed the couple for three years in their daily lives, amidst mounting tensions in their surroundings. Through an intimate lens, photographs and personal smartphone footage, House of Hope tells a powerful and moving story of courage, resilience and the search for humanity under occupation.
