Kokoroko's new album Tuff Times Never Last is a celebration of triumph and joy, with the London-based band expanding their musical palette and influences. Featuring 11 tracks, the album explores genres such as 80s Brit-funk, neo-soul, West African disco, bossa nova, lovers rock and funk. The result is a universal representation of black diasporic music, from past to present, with a strong emphasis on music for the dance floor.
During the two-year recording process, the band developed a strong affinity for vintage studio gear, MPC drum computers and psychedelic synth sounds. This has led to a shift to a more upbeat and party-like tone. The song Sweetie, inspired by West African disco and boogie, is a tribute to the playful bond between lovers and is a bridge between the band's past and future.
Besides Sweetie, the album also includes songs like Three Piece Suit and Never Lost, which retain the classic characteristics of Kokoroko's sound, but in a progressive and updated way. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Loose Ends, Don Blackman, Common, Sly & Robbie, Patrice Rushen and Cymande, the album showcases the band's growth as songwriters.
With Tuff Times Never Last, Kokoroko are at an important turning point in their career. They have their own studio, which gives them the freedom to explore their creativity and develop a cohesive sound. The album is a reflection of their journey and their vision for the future, inviting listeners to participate in this new chapter.
