American saxophonist Mark Turner began his career in the early 1990s with a classically influenced jazz style. He gained fame with albums such as Yam Yam and Dharma Days and worked with artists such as Brad Mehldau and Kurt Rosenwinkel. In 2009, Turner was signed to ECM Records to produce several projects, both with the Fly Trio and solo. Among the major albums he has released with the prestigious label are Lathe of Heaven and Live at the Village Vanguard.
In 2025, Turner will release a new album: Autobiography of the Ex-Coloured Man, inspired by James Weldon Johnson's 1912 novel. This project explores issues of race, class, and cultural identity. Turner incorporates passages from Johnson's lyrics into his own compositions, revisiting the themes from a contemporary perspective. The quintet with which Turner will perform this album on stage at De Roma adds a rich musical dimension to his creations.
