Quinteto Astor Piazzolla

Following the death of renowned Argentine composer and bandoneonist Astor Piazzolla in 1992, his widow, Laura Escalada Piazzolla, establishes the Astor Piazzolla Foundation. This foundation's mission is to preserve and promote Piazzolla's artistic legacy. In 1998, the Quinteto Astor Piazzolla is born, consisting of five virtuoso musicians: Pablo Mainetti (bandoneon), Nicolás Guerschberg (piano), Serdar Geldymuradov (violin), Armando de la Vega (guitar) and Daniel Falasca (double bass). With Julián Vat as musical director, they are committed to keeping Piazzolla's unique musical language alive and shared worldwide.

Not coincidentally, as Astor Piazzolla's favourite ensemble form has always been the quintet. For this ensemble, he developed his revolutionary style Nuevo Tango in the 1960s. This style combines traditional tango with elements of classical music and jazz. After a period in Europe, Piazzolla reformed his quintet in 1978 and toured the world with it for 10 years. This second formation played a key role in his international breakthrough and inspired him to compose some of his greatest masterpieces.

The current Quinteto Astor Piazzolla also performs all over the world and will be awarded a Latin Grammy for Best Tango Album in 2019. With albums such as Revolucionario, Fugata, En 3×4 and Triunfal, they revive both well-known and lesser-known works. During their international tour in 2021-2022, in honour of Piazzolla's centenary of birth, they will pay tribute to Piazzolla's rich musical legacy by combining his classical and popular repertoire in compelling concerts full of passion and virtuosity.
