Not possible, doesn't exist.

Celebration of Failure

Every artist or performer describes a work of art they could never realise. In Kan niet bestaat niet (Impossible doesn't exist), a podcast by the Brakke Grond and Mister Motley, Flemish and Dutch creatives talk about a work that never saw the light of day.

As part of Feest van het Falen, Curieus and Spreken is Goud invite podcast makers Lieneke Hulshof and Maurits de Bruijn to Amor. They will talk with two artists for a live recording of their podcast series.

The podcast Kan niet bestaat niet is about art that wasn't realised. Perhaps the work foundered for lack of money or time. Possibly gravity or other natural laws got in the way. Or it turned out that someone else had already developed that one genius idea.

In conversation with Lieneke and Maurits, artists talk about dreams that turn out to be too big. They do so through moving anecdotes and stories of tragicomic failures. This gives listeners an exceptionnel look behind the scenes: a unique insight into the artist's creative process. An insight into the world of trial and error that lies behind the successful works that did make it to the museum walls.

The 2 artists to be the guests on this episode of Kan niet bestaat niet are:

Samuel Baidoo (they/them) is a dancer, graphic designer, performer, mentor and one of the artistic leaders of the artist collective Hanafubuki. Within their individual track, they link autobiographical experiences to diverse forms of work through the intuitive construction of multimedia archives. With Lieneke and Maurits, they will talk about their project Plum Road Tea Dream, an investigation into the video game as a safe space for mental health and healing.

Fatinha Ramos (she/her) is a Portuguese illustrator and artist based in Antwerp. Her work explores unique textures and touches emotionally, while addressing important social issues such as climate change, sexism and racism. She gives a voice to minorities who need to be heard. Her illustrations have been published in prestigious media such as The New York Times, TIME and MoMA

Maurits de Bruijn (he/him) is an author and podcast maker. He wrote the novels Broer and De achterkant van de zon. In 2020, he published his non-fiction debut Ook mijn Holocaust and in 2023, he compiled the collection Op de sofa, Essays over therapie en het leven. Last year, his latest novel Man maakt stuk was released.

Lieneke Hulshof (she/her) is a freelance art journalist, curator, moderator and lecturer. In her indoor and outdoor exhibitions, such as on the cultural history of the (farming) landscape in the Netherlands or Beelden in Leiden, she wants to make art concrete and show that artists tell stories that are ultimately about all of us.
